Good morning, this is Dr. Yudelkys Gutiérrez from the Cuban Oral Health Clinic.

In order to establish a good diagnosis, as precise as possible, it is very important to follow an orderly pattern in the examination of the patient during the study models in orthodontic treatment.

With a good diagnosis, it is possible to determine what type of morphological or functional anomaly the patient has.

To do this, it is necessary to perform:

  • Questioning
  • Oral examination, as well as a facial examination
  • Direct measurements
  • Extraoral and intraoral photographs
  • X-rays
  • Study models as well as other diagnostic means

Today we are going to focus a little on the importance of study models.

What are study models?

Well, they are nothing more than plaster models that allow us to study all the structures of the oral cavity, with them we can determine the type of anomaly in the shape, position and volume of the teeth, in addition we carry out important measurements to determine the width of the jaws, the relationship between both, as well as the bone-tooth discrepancy, and once this entire study is carried out together with the other diagnostic means, we can conclude what pathology the patient has.

Once the anomaly is determined, we set the objectives to develop and the treatment plan to be able to achieve its correction.

For all that I have explained to you, it is important that patients are aware of the importance of taking an impression (study models) and with it the need to obtain a good diagnosis before placing the braces.
